Yours And Mine: Our First Experiences With Film And Video
I was a movie boy. Born and raised in Southern California, the bright lights, big houses and fancy cars of Hollywood, Culver City, and Malibu were just a stones throw away. I watched a lot of movies as a child, but never really thought much about what I was seeing. These movies were just entertainment and the idea of actually making movies of my own was the last thing I could imagine.
But then, out of the blue, our school announced that there would be a whole new line up of classes aimed at art and education. Painting, acting, juggling, and video classes were introduced. The coach of my high school soccer team (of which I was the captain) was going to be teaching the video class, so I signed up – not because I wanted to learn how to make videos necessarily, but just because I liked my coach and thought the class would be fun.
I didn’t take the class too seriously at first. I didn’t have any clue how films and videos were made and I didn’t think that our small school had the resources to actually make movies of our own. For that reason, I assumed the class would be more about the theory of making movies than it would about actually going out to shoot and edit our own material.
But to my surprise, I showed up on that first day and was instantly turned on to the magic that is the moving picture. Something just clicked inside by brain and I realized in an instant that I could use video to explain myself, express myself, and make other people experience something deep within their own consciousness. I instantly knew that film and video was a powerful medium and that I had to be a part of it.
That’s how I was first turned on to film and video. What were your first experiences with the movies? What made you want to pursue a career in film and television? What made you think that this was the career choice for you?
