Asking For Film Recommendations

How do you decide which films you are going to see? Do you read reviews? Do you ask your friends? Do you see trailers on TV? Or read blogs on the Internet?

What about asking complete strangers?

Asking strangers is one of the best ways to find out about new films that you might not normally hear about otherwise.

The problem with finding new films via your friends, newspaper reviews, or TV trailers is that the type of films usually found through these means are already in your realm. In other words, you won’t find out about DIFFERENT films through these sources.

The key to finding new and exciting films is to ask people you don’t know for their recommendations.

But be careful!

There are two types of responses you will typically get when you ask a stranger for their movie recommendations.

1). The first person is the person you want to avoid. This is the person, who when you ask him which film he likes most, responds by telling you about a film he saw last week. Or he might respond with an obviously stupid movie, like “Tropic Thunder” for example. If you find yourself in a conversation with someone like this, run away… and run away fast! This person doesn’t know a thing about movies.

2). But then there is the person who actually knows a thing or two. This person actually has a few favorite films and can list them to you in a matter of seconds. Some of these films may be names you recognize, but some may be films you have never heard of before. If the stranger names a film you haven’t heard of, write it down. Then, when you have a chance, try and find that film and watch it!  You might be pleasantly surprised by what you discover… and you’ll be glad you asked for the stranger’s recommendations.

Definitely an interesting perspective on the limits of recommendations from people you know. What about recommendations from critics? Another option, of course, is online recommendations.
